TERM ONE 2015

This term we have two main Writing focuses, Speeches and Narratives. We will be integrating this unit with our Inquiry unit about me, myself and I.

It certainly will be an exciting term!

For our reading programme we will be reading a range of different texts such as journal articles, chapters from books, newspaper articles, speeches etc to encourage students to read other types of texts. We have also been focusing on specific reading strategies which we practice (or revise) with the teacher before going away and completing an activity involving that strategy and applying this all texts we read.

Some of these strategies include:
- Using our prior knowledge while reading
- Inferring what the author is writing
- Summarising texts
- Skim reading
- Predicting what will happen next

Our novel study focus will be on the exciting story of Brian who ends up lost in the bus after the helicopter he is in crashes. The day to day struggles of life in the bush and the growth of the character make "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen, an exciting and relevant text for our inquiry unit.

Find reading a chore? Try these ideas to get you excited about Reading:
- Go to the library and tell your friendly Librarian what your interests are and they will no doubt find you a stack of books.
- Try audio books, you get to listen to the text read aloud as you read aloud.
- Read everything you can! That cereal box certainly does seem interesting while you are eating your breakfast!
- Ask your Librarian about Sophisticated picture books. They are picture books written for more mature audiences. You can read the story and look at the illustrations along the way.
- Ask your friends, family or Teachers what they like to read or would recommend. You could be surprised at what people enjoy Reading!

Need to practice your spelling? Check out this fun game where you choose the level and compete against other people at what ever spelling stage you are at. Click here to take you to the game.

Our You Can Spell programme will continue every week. Great ways to help improve your Spelling include:
- Practice! Practising at every opportunity you have. You can can only get better with practice.
- Reading! Read everything you can! Cereal boxes, comics, novels, newspapers, road signs, the more you read the easier Spelling gets.
- Putting your Spelling words on a piece of paper and sticking them on the back of the toilet door. This also works if you want to improve in your basic facts!
